Our strategic plan

Wessex Museums exists to build the resilience and relevance of the museums in our partnership and across our region.

Our mission is to support our partner museums to connect, inspire and add value to people’s lives, guided by our shared vision – museums thriving through collaboration. We start a new chapter, with 2023 marking a new National Portfolio Organisations (NPO) funding award to assist our partnership until 2026.

The strategic plan for 2023-26 focusses on:

  • Connecting with communities
  • Improving access to our world-class collections
  • Showcasing the impact of our work as a partnership
  • Supporting our partners to improve their resource capacity and team development
  • Embedding equality, diversity & inclusion (EDI) and environmental sustainability best practices in our organisations

Wessex Museums remains dedicated to being a dynamic driver for museum practice and programmes that are more relevant to more people.

Sawfish are also called carpenter sharks...but they are rays, not sharks!

There’s also a species called a sawshark, but that’s, well, a shark!

What the heck is a lek?

Males great bustards perform spectacular courtship displays, gathering at a ‘lek’ or small display ground to try to impress the females.

Road Runner!

The great bustard has a dignified slow walk but tends to run when disturbed, rather than fly.

Belly Buster!

The hen-bird on display at The Salisbury Museum was one of the last great bustards to be eaten in the town!
