Student Rachel to help us with digital projects

It’s all go at Wessex Museums as interest grows in our Thomas Hardy exhibition. So we’re thrilled that Rachel Parsons has joined us as a digital marketing placement until the end of May. Rachel is currently studying for an MA in Arts Management at Bath Spa University.

Working with us 1.5 days a week, Rachel will be helping with projects such as the Thomas Hardy online activities calendar, the climate emergency virtual exhibition, and general social media tasks.

Rachel already has some experience in the museum and arts world, and hopes to secure a job in the sector when she finishes her MA. She said:

“I’m excited for my placement with Wessex Museums, and look forward to gaining valuable insights about the museum sector as well as helping to assist with the promotion of their upcoming exhibitions.

“In 2016 I graduated from my BA in Fine Art Printmaking at the University of Brighton. In between my degrees, I worked in education at an art school, where I taught art and design, was a print and visual arts technician and assisted with setting up exhibitions and showcasing student work.

“In the future I hope to work in the arts and museum sector using my knowledge and passion for arts education and marketing to help improve community engagement.”

Sawfish are also called carpenter sharks...but they are rays, not sharks!

There’s also a species called a sawshark, but that’s, well, a shark!

What the heck is a lek?

Males great bustards perform spectacular courtship displays, gathering at a ‘lek’ or small display ground to try to impress the females.

Road Runner!

The great bustard has a dignified slow walk but tends to run when disturbed, rather than fly.

Belly Buster!

The hen-bird on display at The Salisbury Museum was one of the last great bustards to be eaten in the town!
